For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12 – NASB)

I think we do the “Word of God” a great injustice by limiting Him to only a book, when He is so much more. Jesus is the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us (See John 1:14). There is no disputing this as fact:

God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. (Hebrews 1:1-2 – NASB).

But there is something we may have missed in how we interpret the Scriptures because it was Jesus, the Word made flesh, who said:

It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:4 – NASB).

Jesus was quoting a Scripture from Deuteronomy, and this reference to the Word was not about the Bible. The Bible does not contain all the Words spoken by God, and every mention of the “Word of God” in Scripture was spoken before there was a Bible. The correction here is not to idolize the Bible and make it God. We need to see the Bible’s importance in its proper context.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  (John 1:1 – NASB)

This text speaks to three different levels of the Word converging into One Person. The Word of God is a spiritual entity in which we live, move, breath and have our existence. The reality is, the world and everything in it is held together by the vibrational frequency of the voice of God, which means His voice reverberates throughout creation, and holds everything together. If God should stop speaking for a mili-second, the world and everything in it would disappear and cease to exist. It is true that God is God all by Himself. It is only by His voice can anything else exist.

From a scientific perspective, the human body is made up of 37.2 trillion cells. If you pull these cells apart, the body will disappear because the cells are not visible to the human eye. What science cannot definitively say is what holds these cells together. I believe the answer is “the Word of God.”

The Bible speaks of the Word of God as a living entity:

  • the Word of God came to Nathan (1 Chronicles 17:3)
  • the Word of God increased (Acts 6:7)
  • the Word of God grew and multiplied (Acts 12:24)
  • the Word of God grew mightily and prevailed (Acts 19:20)
  • the Word of God is quick, and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12)
  • the Word of God liveth and abideth forever (1 Peter 1:23)
  • His name is called the Word of God (Revelation 19:13)

The Word of God is tangible and can be seen. Proverbs 30:5 refers to the Word of God as “he.” The Word of God is also referred to as a seed, which means it can produce something.

We are commissioned to eat the good Word of God and live an abundant life. This is more than just reading the Bible. God has always desired for us to encounter and experience Him. The Bible was written to help us know when it is Him that we are experiencing. There are other beings that come into the earth pretending to be God.

We must see the Word of God as more than just a book. We grossly limit God, and ourselves by doing this. If you are reading this, then I want to believe that God is removing any mental limitations you may have in order to reposition you so He can reveal Himself to you as He truly is.

Get ready!
